2014 {A Reflection of the Year}

I remember last New Year’s Eve, John and I decided to go out and celebrate the new year. We had a few drinks but nothing too outrageous. The next morning I woke up and had what felt like the worst hangover of my entire life. I thought it was odd because we didn’t go crazy the night before and I didn’t typically get many hangovers.

The “hangover” feeling lasted a couple mornings and I began to think it was quite odd. I decided that maybe I should take a pregnancy test, and sure enough it was positive! So, 2014 started with some very exciting news! (And don’t worry, clearly nothing is wrong with Lincoln, I was unaware of being pregnant, I didn’t drink a lot, and he was just a week or two “old”)

2014 consisted of many adventures, a few travels, lots of laughs, and a whole bunch of love.

We finally announced my pregnancy at the end of March because we wanted to tell family and close friends before word got out to everyone. We were unsure at the time what we were having so we had to make the announcement gender neutral.

A couple weeks later we found out that it was going to be a boy!

We had quite the harsh winter here in the Upper Peninsula so a lot of the winter (and even spring) were spent indoors.

As a family we have many dinners together, so this year I wanted to be able to contribute and I decided to cook our Easter dinner. It turned out great if I do say so myself!

In the “beginning” of my pregnancy, I really wanted to be as active as possible, so we enjoyed a lot of exploring. (Things kind of changed towards the end!)

Our “spring” didn’t last very long here and it sort of ran into “summer”. Both of which were not very warm this year, but I wasn’t one to complain.

We took a quick trip to Mackinac Island where we trudged up many stairs (believe me, people looked pretty impressed to see a 30 week pregnant woman going up the stairs I was) and also indulged in some ice cream!

One day we even drove to a town 45 minutes away just to get a cinnamon roll that was as big as our heads!

We celebrated the 4th of July and then my birthday 5 days later.

We had my baby shower on July 12th, everything involved blue! Good thing the ultrasound was right and we really did have a boy!

I had my maternity pictures taken at 35 weeks thanks to a lovely girl who’s photography I had always admired!

10560506_711081232274444_4284084917925611320_o (1)I waitressed until I was 36 weeks pregnant and then I decided it was about time to hang it up for a bit. Every shift got more and more exhausting after a while.

In August we helped my brother and his wife move into their new place while we took over their old house. It was definitely a nice change to go from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom house. Luckily, I got out of moving most of the stuff anyways so it was a pretty easy move for me!

Only a few days were warm enough this summer to get in the water but we definitely took advantage of them! (And so did the dogs!)

10603468_10204734302818171_1734351901878080290_nThe end of August basically became a waiting game. I was due on the 29th but we were hoping he would arrive before then. We celebrated John’s birthday on the 25th in hopes that Lincoln would share the same day! We were wrong..

10421212_10204741805885743_8072029811820527960_nThe nursery was set and so were we. But, we ended up having to wait until September until Lincoln would make his appearance. And when he did, it was worth the wait!

Once he arrived it was time to transition right back into school mode. I went from college student during the day to new mom at night. It sure was a blurry couple of months, but they went by fast!

We celebrated Halloween, Thanksgiving, graduation, and Christmas in a few short months.

It’s crazy to think how fast 2014 went by. A lot of it really did involve getting ready for Lincoln, celebrating his birth, and finishing up my degree.

Now with a new baby, and being a college graduate, I think 2015 has a lot more in store for us as well. Hopefully it just goes by a little slower so we can enjoy it to the fullest! Cheers to a happy New Year for everyone!

Life is busy

I’ve sat down to write a post quite a few times over this holiday vacation so far. I realize that it has been weeks since I’ve wrote something. I’ve just come to realize that life is busy! Even if Lincoln wasn’t around, the last couple of weeks would still have kept me tied up. Between finishing my last semester of school, graduation, John’s parents coming to town, and Christmas.. I didn’t really have much time to sit down, let alone write something (sadly).

Now that everything is starting to die down a bit, the writing will be more consistent (I hope!) Life is still busy with or without the holidays, but I should have more time to sit down and write now.

It’s crazy how fast things can go by. I remember having Lincoln on the first day of the semester and thinking to myself that the end seemed so far away. Somehow through all of the studying, paper writing, feeding, and diaper changing, the end seemed to come out of no where. The semester is over and graduation has already happened. It really is crazy to think that it all ended so quickly.

Since graduation was just 5 days before Christmas it was a quick transition from one to the other. It sure was nice to celebrate Lincoln’s first Christmas. I realize that he won’t really remember it or even know whether or not he got any presents but we still got some anyway. Just things that we would have bought them anyways, but just wrapped them up and put them under the tree instead.

Christmas came at a great time this year. It was great to celebrate graduation and spend a lot of time with family. Now that everything is winding down, it’s kind of nice to sit in my cozy house drinking a cup of coffee and enjoying the fact that Lincoln is peacefully napping.

There is just one more holiday to celebrate (New Years!) I cannot believe how fast 2014 has gone by. A lot sure has happened in one year! I’ll be writing a reflection post on the year sometime this week. What are everyone’s plans to ring in the New Year?!

What comes next

This week marks my last week as an undergraduate. To be completely honest, I didn’t think I was going to make it to this point. Things got extremely overwhelming at times. And if you recall in one of my earlier blog posts, I had long list of things that needed to be completed before the semester was over.

I was finally able to manage my time and I began to take things day by day. I can’t stress enough that time management makes a big difference. Instead of looking at a great big list of things, I spaced everything out by week and I’m happy to say that going into my last week all I have left is an exam and two pages left of a paper to write.

As for after graduation, things are up in the air. Having Lincoln changed my whole mind on what I wanted to do. But I am definitely not complaining about that! Before I had thoughts of going to grad school, moving to Chicago, or doing anything to get myself away from this small town. But now I realize how amazing it is to have family close by.

I haven’t really had the time to job search just yet but I know eventually the right one will come around. To be honest, I’m not even sure what I want to do with my degree just yet.

As for now, my focus is on making it through this last week and getting to graduation on the 20th. This semester has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. I will just be happy when it’s over!

Dear Lincoln {3 months}

Dear Lincoln,

How has 3 months already gone by? It sure is true when they say babies grow up in the blink of an eye. You’re such a happy baby now! Smiling at everything and cooing, too! Sometimes at night you will just smile and coo in your bed when you’re supposed to go to sleep. But I can’t be mad because it’s the cutest thing.

This month was pretty busy! You had to get your 2 month shots and you didn’t care for those at all! But shortly after you were back to smiling again! We played around in the house a lot this month since theres so much snow and it’s so cold outside now. You’re gonna have to get used to it when you’re older though!

You’re beginning to like tummy time a little bit I think! You’re definitely starting to pick your head up off the ground. And now you have a major obsession with eating your hands! That’s one thing that distracts you from tummy time. You’d rather munch on your hands than lift your head, but thats okay!

This month we celebrated Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for you! We went to your grandparents house and ate lots of food. (Well sadly, you didn’t eat the food but you can next year!) We got to spend time with your uncle Mark & aunt Laura, & cousin Ann! She’s very interested in you!

We also went to pick out a Christmas tree and you loved it! You got to be all bundled up in a little sleigh and watch as we picked the right one. We decorated at home and you love all the pretty lights. I decided to take advantage of that and get some pictures with you and the Christmas lights.

This next month of yours will be really busy. Mom is graduating from college(!!), your other grandparents are coming up from downstate to visit, and we get to celebrate your first Christmas & New Years!

Everyday with you is more exciting and fun, I can’t wait to see what this month has in store!

 Love,
Mom

Lincoln’s Christmas Pictures

I’ve always lived by the rule that Christmas does not start until after Thanksgiving. But that doesn’t mean it can’t start immediately after! We started decorating on Friday and we picked out our Christmas tree on Saturday.

While putting up the lights I came up with the idea of taking some Christmas photos of Lincoln. He did such a good job and loved looking at the lights. He even tried eating them as well. He’s starting the phase where everything goes in his mouth.

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I can’t believe it’s already December and Lincoln turns 3 months old tomorrow!
